The Centre for Chiropractic Research (CCR) is the dedicated research arm of the College and is a resource for the College.

As a researcher, she has investigated the effects of chiropractic adjustments of dysfunctional spinal segments (vertebral subluxations) on somatosensory processing, sensorimotor integration and motor cortical output. 

She was named Chiropractor of the year in 2007 by both the New Zealand Chiropractic Association and the New Zealand College of Chiropractic Alumni Association. Her work has been instrumental in building the base of scientific evidence demonstrating the efficacy of chiropractic care in improving people's health and wellbeing.

Recent scientific studies are revealing a new understanding about how spinal adjustments work. Heidi Haavik, a chiropractor and PhD trained neurophysiologist has spent the past 16 years studying the changes that occur in the brain when chiropractors adjust chiropractic subluxations. The original theories were based on the idea that dysfunctional spinal segments were ‘out of place’, or misaligned, and that this put pressure on the nerves exiting the spine. We now know that this theory is not really the best way to describe what a chiropractic subluxation is. The original theories were based on the idea that an adjustment relieved pressure off the squashed nerves. We now also know this is not the best way to describe the neurophysiological effects of an adjustment. Today, over a hundred years on from that ‘first’ chiropractic adjustment, we know much more about how the brain and the rest of the central nervous system functions. Just as multidisciplinary practice has increased in popularity over the last few years, a troubling trend has occurred. More and more chiropractors are undertaking the conversion of their chiropractic practices into multidisciplinary practices without the legal and managerial assistance of professionals experienced in this highly regulated area. In a recent survey performed by Chiropractic Economics, 28.7% of chiropractors responded that they practice in a multidisciplinary setting. Only 24.7% of these reported that they worked with a practice-management/consulting group. Myron Leinwetter, DO, is a former Blue Cross Blue Shield of Kansas (BCBSKS) Medical Director for Quality Improvement, Care Coordination, and Medical Policy. Dr. Leinwetter was born in Atwood, Kansas, and attended the University of Kansas School of Pharmacy.  He subsequently attended the University of Health Sciences College of Osteopathic Medicine in Kansas City and is board certified in Family Medicine.  His medical career started at the Dodge City Medical Center and he later practiced at the Rossville Clinic until 2002.  He served as a medical missionary in Costa Rica for one year and returned to the US to serve as the Medical Director at the Shawnee County Health Agency Community Health Center until 2011.  His current position is at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas, he is the Medical Director for Quality Improvement, Disease Management, Care Coordination and Medical Policy.

In 2016 the Foundation for Chiropractic Progress explored the opportunities for the chiropractic profession within the nation’s opioid crisis. In the last year the crisis has grown in proportion and impact to the point where it has been labeled the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) “biggest crisis” and calls for opioids to be identified as a “national emergency” in an interim White House Commission report released on July 31, 2017. In 2016 F4CP advised of daily U.S. overdose death rates of 78 persons. The current number places the carnage at 142 individuals dying per day from this scourge.

The magnitude of the crisis, combined with calls from every sector of national health policy, for increased emphasis and reliance on non-pharmacologic approaches to pain management are setting the stage for greater acceptance of the role of the chiropractor in responding to these issues.

A range of responses spanning state, local, and individual levels will be discussed in practical and pragmatic terms offering strategies, tools, and examples of how the profession can address this life and death need. 

Gerard W. Clum, D.C., a 1973 Palmer College of Chiropractic graduate has been a faculty member at Palmer College of Chiropractic, a founding faculty member at Life Chiropractic College (now Life University) and first president of Life Chiropractic College West holding office from January 1981 through January 2011.  Dr. Clum served on the board of directors or as an officer of the Association of Chiropractic Colleges (ACC), the Council on Chiropractic Education (CCE), the International Chiropractors Association (ICA), the Foundation for Chiropractic Progress (F4CP), the Chiropractic Summit and the World Federation of Chiropractic (WFC). He presently serves on the Executive Committee and Board of Directors of the F4CP and as Treasurer and  member of the Board of Directors of the Integrated Health Policy Consortium (IHPC). 

Since retiring from the presidency of Life Chiropractic College West as President Emeritus he accepted an appointment as Presidential Liaison for External Affairs at Life University. He has also been appointed the Director of The Octagon, a think-tank sponsored by Life University. Dr. Clum was also recently named Director of the newly formed Center for Compassion, Integrity and Secular Ethics (CCISE) at Life University. In 2016 Dr. Clum accepted the position of Executive Director of The Rubicon Group, a collaboration of seven chiropractic educational programs from the U.S., U.K., Spain, Germany and New Zealand.
