Rhode Island Medicaid
Pilot Project
Results

Report from Dr. Alan Post - Legislative Chair Chiropractic Society of Rhode Island -

I have discussed our RI Medicaid Pilot with many of you personally, via e-mail, and for some by tele over the past several years.

Finally, I have the pleasure, honor, and privilege to be able to share the outcomes of the program with you.

Begun in 2012, the project continues on today with evaluation under way for expansion to broader appropriate pain patients within the RI Medicaid system. The outcomes are stellar!

1.  Reduction of average medical costs: 27%

2.  Reduction ER visits: 61%

3.  Reduction of total prescriptions: 63%

4.  Reduction of Opioid Scripts: 86%

5.  Patients that would recommend the program: 96%

Here's the most current summary regarding the Pilot & Program - RI Generic Marketing Results.  Key points:  for every $1 spent - $2.41 in savings, reductions 50-85% pharma, ipioids, ER, significant improved health outcomes, 90%+ patient satisfaction.

Currently in meetings with RI DoH & RI Medicaid about expanding the program beyond the initially targeted population for the piolot (RI's most costly Medicaid recipients) to those defined as "chronic pain" patients within RI Medicaid.

Key Point - RI DoH Director included in her recommendations to the Governor's Overdose Task Force that increased access to alternative therapies (Chiro, Acup, MT) is part of the solution to the problem.

Currently, definining the new payment model paradigm (pay for outcomes vs fee for service) is the main issue in health care along with teh Opioid-Overdose crisis.  It is being reviewed and I am attending/presenting at DoH-Ins. Com meetings.  As you can imagine, there is a log of push back.

The fact that AMI will go 100% "at-risk" on using this model for chronic pain patients is EXACTLY the end point the innovative models want to get to; as well as proof positive that the integrative model is a key aspect to improving the delivery system.

Any state that is interested in seeking info on implementing the program can contact Dr. Alan Post at
dr.alanpost@verizon.net.
